Eastbourne football fans are in for a treat on Wednesday, November 27, as, weather permitting, all of the town’s teams are set for action in the Sussex Senior Cup second round.
The pick of the action sees Sussex Division Two leaders Eastbourne United host Football League One outfit Crawley Town.
United have claimed high-profile scalps in the FA Vase this season, however, they won’t have come up against opposition quite like Crawley, who have aspirations of promotion to the Championship - the second tier of English football.
It’s a plumb tie for United and after easing past Saltdean United 5-1 in the first round, they’ll be expecting a bumper crowd at the Oval for the game, especially as the other Eastbourne teams will all be on the road.
Eastbourne Borough will be well fancied, not only for their trip to County Division One strugglers Shoreham, but perhaps a place in latter stages of the competition.
Their opponents did come through the first round largely untroubled, winning 2-0 in Midhurst & Easebourne, but the gulf in class should tell in this tie.
Eastbourne Town, meanwhile, face a tricky test at St Francis Rangers. Despite plying their trade a league below Town, St Francis will prove a threat having made light work of their first round clash with Worthing United, running out 9-2 winners.
If the Eastbourne side’s can negotiate the second round they will go into the last 16 where they are likely to be joined by Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion, who host Arundel.
Brighton are the current holders and will be strong favourites to lift the cup, something they’ve managed in six of the last seven seasons.
The full second round draw is as follows:
AFC Uckfield v Horsham YMCA
Bognor Regis v Lancing
Brighton and Hove Albion v Arundel
