The football community paid tribute this week to former Eastbourne United goalkeeper Nick Maynard.

Maynard, 30, died on Monday night when his car plunged over the cliffs at Beachy Head close to Belle Tout Lighthouse.

Maynard was a talented goalkeeper and represented Eastbourne Borough youth team and reserves and then signed for County League side Eastbourne United. He was part of United’s league and cup double winning team in 2009 under then manager Brian Dennis.

Speaking on Tuesday Dennis said, “I was just absolutely shocked and saddened when I heard the news. He was a big character in the dressing room and on the pitch. He worked hard at his football and he never gave me a moment of trouble while I was the manager.

“He never once let me down. He was a very talented lad. He wasn’t your usual 6ft 2” strapping goalkeeper. He was quite small for a ‘keeper but he was very commanding. He was excellent under a high ball and very agile.”

Dennis added, “My thoughts go out to his family and his friends. It is such a sad loss for a lad so young.”
