Poor weather is becoming a concern - Nealgrove

SOUTHERN Combination Football League chairman Steve Nealgrove admits the recent poor weather is slowly becoming a concern.

Just eight games were played across the three divisions on Saturday, while only five games were completed the previous week.

Nealgrove feels a fixture congestion is not a concern at the moment but says it could become a problem if games continue to be postponed.

He said: “It’s obviously not ideal at the minute with a number of postponements across the leagues.

“I think it’s borderline at present from when we begin to become get really concerned.

“We are not as badly affected as other teams in leagues are but we don’t want to be getting too far behind with fixtures.

“Should the next two or three fixture programmes be decimated then we could potentially see Premier Division teams playing two or three times a week.

“This has happened in previous seasons and we have got there in the end but we are hoping the rearranged games can be played in the next few weeks and that it all gets back to normal.

“It’s a challenge for the clubs as well as us at the Combination League but as long as the weather begins to improve, we should be fine.”

All of the matches in the Brighton, Worthing & District League, West Sussex League and Worthing & Horsham League were all postponed at the weekend.

All matches on Brighton & Hove and Worthing & Adur council pitches had been called off earlier in the week owing to the heavy rainfall.

In the Ryman South, seven of the nine scheduled fixtures were all played, while two matches went ahead in the Sussex Sunday League.

There was just one game played in the Worthing and Horsham District League with The Vine overcoming Southdown 4-2 on the 3G surface at Worthing’s Woodside Road.
