  • Finishing master class from Pogue keeps Town in the hunt
  • Littlehampton draw at Pagham while rivals Dorking taste defeat
  • Town remain fifth but close the gap on leaders

Kenny Pogue hit a hat-trick as Eastbourne Town narrowly took a much-needed three points on Saturday.

The clinical striker started the season at the Saffrons before returning to his former club Hastings United.

Perhaps the biggest cheer of the afternoon came as news filtered through of Littlehampton Town’s draw at Pagham and Dorking Wanderers’ defeat at Shoreham.

But boss John Lambert managed to convince him to come back and his presence couldn’t have been more timely as he displayed a finishing master class.

Pogue opened the scoring in the 10th minute before they were pegged back four minutes later by Asa Nicholson.

Pogue restored the lead on the half-hour mark but Town have struggled to see teams off in recent weeks and Barney Boutwood capitalised on the nerves to restore parity again just after the half time break.

A huge cheer went up when the striker completed his treble and he might have added two more before the final whistle.

The last half hour was nervy but Lambert’s men held on and could have increased their lead.

Perhaps the biggest cheer of the afternoon came as news filtered through of Littlehampton Town’s draw at Pagham and Dorking Wanderers’ defeat at Shoreham.

Town remain fifth in Sussex Division One but have closed the gap on third placed Pagham to just two points and they have a game in hand.

They are seven points behind Littlehampton in second and the two will go head-to-head at the end of March.

Leaders Dorking are two points further in front.
