Top goal-scorer Liam Baitup is doubtful for Eastbourne United’s double-header weekend after picking up a slight hamstring strain against Steyning last weekend.
Baitup has been in fine form for United, scoring four goals in each of their opening two matches of the season.
He was substituted off the pitch on Saturday as a precaution after picking up the slight strain and boss Paul Daubeney is now hoping his star striker will be available to face Newhaven on Friday night and Bexhill United on Bank Holiday Monday.
He said, “He does have a slight hamstring problem and he didn’t train this week but we’re hoping, touch wood, that after being rested he’ll be alright for this weekend.
“He’s been doing really well. If people put balls into the box, then he’ll get goals. I took him off on Saturday as a precaution but if he’d stayed on he’d probably have scored more than four.”
Eastbourne welcome Newhaven to The Oval on Friday night, who, like United, can boast a 100 per cent record so far this season.
Daubeney said, “I couldn’t really ask for much more so far this season, it’s going really well. What matters though is whether we’re still doing well at the end of the season, after the 34 games.
“Whenever you’re at the top of the table, you’re always there to be knocked off. A lot of people I’ve spoke to have said Eastbourne look good for promotion but I don’t want that pressure.”
On Monday, Eastbourne host another team who have also earned maximum points from their opening two matches in Bexhill United.
Lee Jules is a doubt for the weekend matches after taking a knock, while Shaun Lee is also unavailable. Simon Catt and Gianluca Del-Gaudio are available.
