New Eastbourne United manager Simon Rowland has made his first signing of the summer, acquiring the services of former Eastbourne Town defender Shaun Loft.
The vastly-experienced 35-year-old also joins the Oval as the new club captain for the upcoming 2013/2014 season.
Loft, the first player to be comfirmed for United as Rowland starts to build his squad from scratch, has previously played for a number of local clubs, including Hastings United, St Leonards and rivals at the Saffrons, Eastbourne Town.
He started his career as a striker before switching to defence and now joins Eastbourne United from fellow Sussex County League Division Two side Rye United, where he was also captain and held the club record for number of appearances, making over 400 and scoring near 200 goals.
He also helped Rye clinch the Sussex RUR Charity Cup back in April and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the FA Vase in 2010/11.
Rowland said, “I am pleased to announce the new club captain for the coming season will be Shuan Loft. Shaun has previously played for my assistant, Scott Price, at Rye and was a key part of their terrific FA Vase side from a couple of seasons ago.
“Lofty has plenty of experience at all levels of non-league football and, having briefly played with and against him myself, I know the winning qualities that he will bring to the club. He is a great first signing ahead of the 2013/14 season.”
