Eastbourne United giving themselves 'mountains to climb'

Matt Crabb believes his Eastbourne United side are giving themselves too many ‘mountains to climb’ recently.

His side went out of the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup on Tuesday night, losing 3-1 to AFC Uckfield Town.

United went 2-0 down within 27 minutes after goals from Jack Samways and Callum Smith.

The latter got his second late on before Dominic Cole got a late consolation for United.

Crabb said: “It’s very disappointing. We’re giving away goals far too much recently and giving ourselves mountains to climb to try to get back in the game, which really isn’t good enough by our standards.

“The lads recognise that and hopefully it’s something we can put right sooner rather than later.”

United are one of many teams who have suffered by lack of momentum due to the weather hitting the fixture list hard.

Crabb added: “The weather isn’t helping, but it’s not just us but the league in general.

“It becomes difficult to get into any rhythm when it’s so much stop start but that’s not the reason why we lost tonight [Tuesday].”

United face East Preston away on Saturday, who were one of the few teams to get a game on Saturday when they beat Steyning Town 2-1.

Crabb said: “To get a result anywhere away in this division you have to go and perform and produce some sort of quality.

“We know we are capable of doing that but I’m not expecting it to be easy.

“They’ve picked up some good results recently and will be full of confidence.”

There has been more team news off the pitch rather than on it for United.

Nathan Crabb has left the club and re-joined Three Bridges but incoming is Sam Cole, brother of Dominic who scored on Tuesday night.

Matt Crabb added: “I’m also hopeful for another signing to be completed this week as well.”
