Tommy Widdrington has added further strength to the Eastbourne Borough defence after capturing former West Ham player Anwar Uddin.

Uddin, 30, began his football career at Upton Park working his way up through their youth and reserve teams where he was captain. He was in West Ham’s victorious 1999 FA Youth Cup winning squad.

In February 2002 he moved to Sheffield Wednesday but moved swiftly on to Bristol Rovers. After a long run in the side an injury forced him to the sidelines.

The following season he was loaned out to Hereford United and Telford United before his eventual release.

Anwar went on to represent Dagenham & Redbridge during the summer of 2004 and he went on to captain the club. After a loan spell at Grays Athletic Anwar left Dagenham to sign for League Two club Barnet and he was again appointed captain ahead of the 2010–11 season.

After a spell as caretaker assistant manager he joined Sutton United last season.

Widdrington said, “I am delighted to welcome Anwar to the club.

“All through our discussions he has really bought in to what we are trying to do at Priory Lane, he is up for the new season without a doubt.

“His experience is all part of the mix, the chemistry, that I am working towards building.”

The defender will join fellow new-signing Marvin Hamilton-Omole who also agreed to join Boro’ for the 2012-13 season.

The attack-minded right-back was drafted in by boss Tommy Widdrington towards the end of last season and made nine appearances for the Sports.

The signings could see a new-look defence at Priory Lane next season. Widdrington has already added no-nonsense defender Matt Turpin to the ranks with Priory Lane crowd favourite and last season’s player of the year Ollie Rowe expected to feature heavily this season.

Promising left-sided player Sam Cole also agreed to stay on at Boro’ following an encouraging debut season in the Blue Square Premier while young Eastbourne midfielder Ethan Strevett has also signed.

Striker David Knight will hope to add to his growing reputation in the non-league game after the speedy 21-year-old was snapped up from Thurrock FC.

Widdrington also bolstered his squad with the addition of two goalkeepers.

Nick Jordan arrived from Weymouth while experienced stopper Danny Potter signed from Staines.

Potter was in the Staines side that lost 2-1 to the Sports last season.
