Eastbourne Borough goalkeeper Lewis Carey is developing quite the reputation as penalty saving expert.

Carey who has saved penalties this season against Maidenhead alongside two crucial penalty stops in the FA Cup at Enfield, was once again at his agile best from 12 yards in Ebbsfleet on Tuesday night.

This time is was Teddy Sheringham’s son, Charlie Sheringham who was denied from the spot midway through the second half as Borough gained an excellent point in a game of few chances at the PHB Stadium.

This was a job well done by Tommy Widdrington’s side who never allowed fourth placed Fleet to find their rhythm.

Widdrington drafted in Dean Sinclair and Richard Pacquette returned from suspension following their 4-2 win against Staines.

Only two points separated the sides at kick-off and there was nothing between them in a tight first half.

Borough strikers Pacquette and Elliott Charles enjoyed a tussle with Fleet centre-backs Anthony Acheampong and Kenny Clarke

One ball bounced kindly for Pacquette, 30 yards out, and he smashed a shot just wide of the left-hand post.

Fleet survived a goalmouth scramble caused by Gavin McCallum’s right-wing corner, whiel Borough threw bodies in front of two goalbound McMahon efforts.

After the break Sheringham rattled the woodwork with an excellent volley. A cross-shot f by Marvin Hamilton clipped off Aiden Palmer but keeper Hall saved comfortably.

Cook’s low cross into the six-yard box found Billy Bricknell but Carey made a crucial save from point-blank range.

The crucial penalty arrived when Khinda-John clumsily fouled Cook but Sheringham’s spot-kick was pushed out by Carey.

Sheringham hooked an effort across goal and Clark sent a header from McMahon’s right-wing corner onto the roof of the net.

Borough’s showed fantastic resolve to keep the home side at bay and thoroughly deserved their point.
