A quite incredible game at Priory Lane saw Eastbourne Borough emerge triumphant in an 11-goal thriller in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

The Sports had dominated the first half, finding the net three times in a six-minute spell with a Darren Lok opener and two goals from Elliott Romain - all three set up by the outstanding Gavin McCallum.

But the 3-0 advantage was whittled away as Hemel, playing with a strong wind, scored in the first minute of the second half and went on to grab a 4-3 lead with only 17 minutes to play. It all appeared to have turned from triumph to disaster for Borough, and they were facing exit from a competition in which they fancied a good run.

Widdrington’s men simply refused to lie down, however, and after substitute Jack Evans had levelled at 4-4, the Sports marauded forward and blasted Hemel with three further goals from McCallum, Pinney and Evans again. McCallum actually finished with a personal tally of one goal and five assists.

Supporters were grateful for the bright red lights of the Priory Lane scoreboard as they struggled to keep the tally. With a final scoreline of 7-4 and a welcome reward of £5,000 as well as a place in the next round, it was not an afternoon to have opted for Christmas shopping
