Paul Daubeney has made a surprise return to football as number two at SCFL Division One side Ringmer.
Daubeney left Eastbourne United in the close season due to a change in his work commitments. However, these failed to fully materialise, meaning when he got the call from new Ringmer boss Jason Hopkinson, he was tempted into a swift return to the game.
He said, “I’d left United because of work commitments but they haven’t materialised fully and are still not 100 per cent settled.
“I found out about that just as United were advertising but it had gone too far by that point. It was horrible to leave but change happens everywhere.
“I got a call a couple of Fridays ago from Jason asking to be his number two.
“I was missing it. I knew come November, October time, I’d want to be back in.
“It will be strange to be a number two again. It will be the first time I’ll have worked with Jason and I’ll be there to back him up and support him. Of course I’ll put my penny’s worth in but it’s his team and he’ll be making the final decision.”
Daubeney’s arrival comes amid many changes at the club after the appointment of the new manager.
Daubeney added, “The team there all seem very experienced, while I have knowledge of the County League, which will hopefully come in handy.
“I’m going to be doing a lot more coaching than I’ve been used to but it’s a new challenge and I’m looking forward to it.”
