John Lambert’s Eastbourne Town progressed to the second round of the RUR Cup with a deserved win at St Francis Rangers.
It was sweet revenge for Town as St Francis had recently beaten Town in the league at the Saffrons.
This time however Town made no mistake and set up tie with hassocks in the next round on September 13. Town started brightly on a bumpy surface and Dan Smith had a goal ruled out after 10 minutes for offside.
Lambert’s men were then denied a penalty when Smith was hauled over in the box. Referee Alex Howard booked defender Luke Akehurst but to the surprise of many, awarded a freekick outside the box which Joe Dryer blasted over.
In the second half Greg Nessling saved well from former Town player Nathan Milroy
but for the most part skipper Steve Elliott and defensive partner Sean Kelly kept it tight at the back restricting the home side to few chances. It looked like the game was heading for extra time but with just two remaining Smith again broke down the right wing he crossed at an angle for Clarke to bundle across the line and give Town the win.
