Eastbourne currently sit second in the table behind leaders Roffey meaning their clash in the penultimate game of the season could go a long way towards determining the title.

“Roffey are where they are for a reason,” explained Smith.

We’ve got ourselves into a position that we didn’t expect to be in so there’s absolutely no pressure on us really. We just need to try and keep doing what we’ve done to get us to where we are now. We must be doing something right to win eight in a row.

“Personally, it is the biggest game of club cricket I have ever played in and I would say that is the case for most of the side, so we need to not let the occasion get to us and hopefully we’ll come out on the right side. We’ll be without our County players Ben Brown and Delray Rawlins once again due to their Sussex commitments, but we have largely had to do it without them this season which hasn’t been ideal, but it speaks volumes for the quality we have throughout the side.”

Top run scorer for Eastbourne James Hockley needs to add 132 runs to his season total of 954 from the last two matches of the season to break the record for runs in a season held by former Eastbourne player, Sean Heather. The record stands at 1086.

“He will definitely be keen to get the record when he hears how close he is,” confirmed Smith.

“I suppose if he does break the record there’s a good chance we have won our last two games and hopefully the league as well so if he could get the record that would be awesome.”
