The batsmen stole the show on Saturday as East Dean recorded a 30-point victory over Uckfield Anderida in Division Three.
An unbeaten 111 from Tom Caffyn and 79 not out for Richard Abson-Bennett put the home side in a fine position but it still took four wickets from the latter, including a superb caught and bowled to seal the win as time was running out.
East Dean won the toss and elected to bat on a good looking track. The uckfield opening bowlers were accurate but opening bats Neil Gamble and Abson-Bennett punished anything overpitched, reaching 85 comfortably before skipper Gamble got out for a fluent 48.
By this time, with the shine off the new ball, the pitch wasn’t helping the bowlers and Tom Caffyn struck the ball to all parts for a quickfire 111 not out.
Abson –Bennett was more measured but no less skilful for his 79 not out and the scoring rate allowed East Dean to declare after 39 overs on 252-1.
Needing to score at less than five an over, Uckfield almost reached the tally due to a mixture of good batting, indifferent bowling and average fielding.
Mark Greenslades stoic 95 was the highlight but at 150 -4 after 30 overs, the game was slipping away from East Dean.
Terry Preston took three wickets but it was Abson-Bennett who came to the rescue, picking up four late wickets as East Dean scraped the win in a match that saw 480 runs in total. East Dean’s 30 points keeps them fourth in the table.
