Isfield v Hailsham

On a scorching afternoon, the hosts won the toss and elected to bat.

Hailsham skipper Andrew Anthony (4-56) opened the bowling coming up the hill but he was soon replaced by Clint Mooiman (2-25), with Tom McDonald (2-34) steaming in at the other end.

Both were rewarded for their hard work with a wicket apiece, dismissing openers Fellows (5) and Thornicroft (7). William Chambers (49) looked to score from the off. With James Bellett (0-71) introduced the bowlers were rotating in the heat.

Hailsham struggled to build momentum. The wicket of Chambers came through a rather comical and well disguised slower ball from Anthony - which the batsman attempted to duck under, with the ball looping down and crashing into the bottom of his leg stump.

Stef Halsey hit a quick 39 but the introduction of Shankar Bala (1-28) constrained the run rate. A plucky tenth wicket partnership added an extra 30 odd, the home side finishingon 223-9.

After rehydration, Rob Wilkinson (10) and Ciaran Peacock (21) set about the chase. Wilkinson was lbw and Ollie McDonald (7) briefly continued the scoring until Peacock was run out.

James Bellett failed to add anything to the score, bowled by Huw Williams (3-42). McDonald chipped up a full toss to mid off.

Harry Chatfield (17) and Tom Hicks (55) looked to steady the ship until Chatfield had a wild sweep across the line and was bowled by Jack Fingernaissl (1-35).

Hicks sent the ball to all corners but at the other end, others struggling to stay in long enough to support him. Tom McDonald (10) looked good before being dismissed lbw and Anthony (0) failed to contribute before being caught on the boundary.

The fall of MoM Hicks as he tried to accelerate brought Bala (14) and Mooiman (0*) to the crease, but Hailsham fell just under 50 runs short.

Hailsham 2nd v Heathfield Park 2nd

Hailsham elected to bat and peners Tim Mullins (5) and Sam Mills (0) didn’t last long but Gareth Morgans (53) helped steady the innings with some aggressive shots. Paul McDonald (19) and Morgans built a partnership, but McDonald was next to go, replaced by Lewis Williams (22).

Morgans brought up his half century with a boundary but Shibin Abraham (0) and Alex Renals (4) failed to hang-around. MoM was Mark Renals (50) .

Williams went after a controlled innings. Matt Anthony (2) perished as did Renals shortly after passing 50. Thomas Mills (2) and Ed Garbett (1no) took Hailsham to 200. Anthony (0-17) and Renals (1-37) bowled a good line and length with the new ball. Abraham (2-36) was unlucky not to take more wickets; Sam Mills (2-28) bowled well but Hailsham lost by four wickets.

Hailsham 3rd v Polegate 2nd

Polegate scored a respectable 199-9. A Swansbrough (37) and Ed Brook (51*) batted well in reply but they ended on 196-5.

Men of the match were Bobby Williams and Brook.

On the hottest day of the year so far, Herstmonceux’s 1st XI travelled to play Heathfield in the August Cup, and the 2nd XI hosted Barns Green in a friendly.

In the cup match, Heathfield Park elected to bat, but only opener Tom Sanderson (52) was able to provide significant runs until the tail was able to make double-figure scores and lift the Heathfield total to 149 all out in 31 overs.

Nick Toomey (4-18) and leg spinner Tom Crouch (3-18) were the top bowlers.

In reply Herstmonceux easily chased down the target for just three wickets in 24 overs with Mickey Toomey (72*) and Ryan Bennett (36) finding the boundary regularly.

Against the second XI, Barns Green made the long trip across to East Sussex and batted first in a 35-over friendly.

A solid start took Barns Green to 116-4 but they were not able to convert to bigger scores with Roger Southgate (32) top scoring.

It was left to the tail to dig in and reach 163 all out in the 35th over.

Edward Vine (3-38) and Paul Sandalls (3-18) were the pick of the Herstmonceux bowlers.

Opener Paul Sandalls anchored the top order (38) but struggled to find a scoring partner.

At the halfway stage, Herstmonceux were 71-5 but Mike Neilan (15*) and quick scoring Hadon Westerby (61*) guided Herstmonceux home with three overs to spare.

In reply Barcombe were all out in the 38th over, reaching a score of 228. Joshua Wheatley top scored with 55 for Barcombe before being run out.

Barcombe required four from the last three overs but with a last wicket stand. Fortunately for Newick Chetal Patel caught Tom Evans to close the innings. Once again Dan Hurkett (3-35) and Lloyd Jones (3-1) came up trumps for Newick.

In the August Cup Group C6 a score of 244-5 was not enough for Uckfield Anderida as Dicker passed the target for the loss of only two wickets.

Glynde v Buxted Park

Glynde comfortably beat Buxted Park in the Village Cup on Sunday.

Buxted Park won the toss and elected to bat and Tom Clift 19 and Dominic Heater 19 added 27 for the first wicket.

But a procession of wickets followed, as only Redding Barnes with 35 not out put up any resistance. Craig Eaves, 3-27, opening the bowling, took out out the top order batting, supported well by Will Burton-Durham 1-11.

Mike Brooks bowled a tight spell as he took 2-14 form his four overs, while Charlie Hobden 3-31 and George Burton-Durham took 1-7, as Buxted Park collapsed to 126 all out in 31.3 overs.

Glynde were under little pressure with another fast outfield at the recreation ground and openers Archie Burrows with 73 not out and skipper Alex Thornhill 41 not out surpassed the Buxted Park score without losing a wicket.

Glynde are away to Bearsted (Maidstone) in the next round this Sunday.

Rottingdean v Dome Mission

Rottingdean got their August Cup campaign back on track with a hard-fought 26-run victory over Dome Mission.

Wickets fell regularly after the Millers’ skipper Jack Cox elected to bat.

His side were in trouble at 34-4 but Wahb Shafi hit 22 and James Yates and Eric Swinn-Ward both scored 19 as the tail helped post a defendable target.

Dome’s response was steady but only opener Joe Gatford (21) and skipper Vikram Sharma (34) looked at ease. But a devastating 3-16 from George Ledden ripped out the middle order and put Rottingdean on course for victory.

“I was really impressed with how we fought and contained Dome with some great bowling and fielding,” said Cox.

Crowhurst Park v Seaford

August Cup

Crowhurst Park captain Tim Hambridge again won toss and with no hesitation elected to bat first in the scorching heat on what looked an excellent wicket.

Hide Ad

Park got off to a good start seeing off the first seven overs from the opening bowlers for 30 runs before opener Joe Lovell fell for 12. Skipper Hambridge and Tom Powell built the score up to 80 before Powell found the man on the midwicket boundary to be dismissed for 29.

This was the last piece of success the Seaford bowlers had for a while as the in-form Brad Payne joined Hambridge. The two once again punished the bowling attack, finding the boundary and running well. The two batsmen built a mammoth partnership, taking the score to 214 before Hambridge fell for a brilliantly made 90 thanks to a diving catch by the point fielder.

Payne continued the attack and punished the Seaford bowlers by picking up more runs, eventually moving into the 90s. Payne hit a six straight over the bowler’s head to move to 99, and after being out on 96 last weekend Payne made no mistake this week, knocking the ball into the leg-side for two to bring up his 100 to a standing ovation from the Park players and few spectators.

Park again managed to go at 10 an over for their last 10 overs, finishing on a big score of 269-5 off 40 overs. After tea Park knew wickets were needed to keep on the front foot.

Park got their wish thanks to a brilliant direct-hit run-out by Nick Peters at square leg to the bowler’s end to dismiss Rob Gravett, the Seaford opener.

The Park bowlers continued to pick up wickets throughout the innings. Zak Hearsey was the only Seaford batsmen to put up a fight, hitting a well-made 57* towards the end.

However, consistent bowling from young Tom Laver (5-2-17-1) and wicket-taking deliveries from pick of the bowlers Nick Peters (8-0-56-3) ensured Park came away with the well-deserved win, bowling Seaford out for 185 in 33 overs to claim two points.

The win saw Park stay top of their August Cup group thanks to net run rate. They will be looking to stay there on Saturday when they visit Hastings Priory seconds.

Iden

Iden CC’s hot streak ended in a broiling week. Asking Pett to bat in the midweek T20, a number of erratic overs gave Pett the impetus to crunch boundaries and push the total to a healthy 175-7.

Iden’s pick of the bowlers were Paul Barnett(4-21-0) and Tom Waters (4-21-2).

Iden’s reply was dealt an early blow with Luke Cross (0) being castled. George Avann (13), K Kahn (28) and G Rens( 13) assisted E Vann (50*) in trying to maintain the required rate. However, with wickets falling the chance began to fade.

T Waters (14*) gave it a last hurrah but Iden closed out 23 runs shy.

On a sun-bleached deck prepared by Dave Townsend, Iden welcomed Robertsbridge to The Park. Errant Iden skipper Phil Shanks elected to bat and soon R Clemence (0) was walking back. However E Avann (81) and James Crombie (29) knuckled down and accumulated.

It was heavy going in the heat and runs dried up until P Shanks (21) and Terry Adams (10) pushed Iden to 183.

Robertsbridge got off to a solid reply before Julian Handshaw (7-35-2) Neil Pearce (8-18-3) and Kamran Kahn (8-32-0) applied pressure. But a few loose overs cost Iden.

Stout resistance from Sandy Boyagis (3-17-1), E Avann (4-5-1) and a great run-out from George Avann could not stop the visitors winning with eight balls left.

Yellow Stump v Westfield

Westfield enjoyed another friendly in the blistering heat.

Yellow Stump elected to bat, but Westfield took the wickets of both openers, bowled by James Smith (3-49).

A brilliant 100 from captain Matthew Reynolds and 94 by Samuel Theodoridi meant Westfield had to chase255 from their 40 overs.

Westfield lost both openers quickly, but Philip Harris (68) and the improving Toby Hubble-Darkes (48) did well.

Home captain Sam Jarvis made 51, but Westfield lost by 21 runs. Westfield MoM was Hubble-Darkes.

Westfield v Little Common Ramblers

Hide Ad

Westfield made it two wins out of two in the August Cup with a 17-run success at home to Little Common Ramblers’ second team.

After electing to bat in very hot conditions, Westfield started well by scoring 39 runs from the first four overs.

But the departure of the in-form Kevin Allman turned the game in favour of Little Common as Westfield lost regular wickets.

This changed, however, when Darren Corke and Rob Ledsham shared a 100-run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Corke made a patient 58 and Ledsham 32, although both were dismissed inside an over of one another and Westfield were all out for 202 from their allotted 40 overs.

Little Common lost both openers cheaply in reply to the excellent Todd Tucker, who went on to remove all of the top five and finish with figures of 5-40.

But a patient innings from Paul Feakins (40) and a hard-hitting knock by Berwick Smith (59) looked to be seeing Common to victory.

The removal of Smith, bowled by Steve Cornford, changed the outcome, though, and Corke (3-30) wrapped up the tail to give Westfield a closely-fought victory.

Westfield, whose man of the match was Corke, will travel to Claremont School tomorrow to play Crowhurst Park thirds.

Ashburnham v Winchelsea

Winchelsea travelled to Ashburnham for a friendly on a hot afternoon and, on losing the toss, the visitors were asked to field first.

Ashburnham got off to a rapid start with an opening partnership of 101 before G Wicks (72) was caught behind off Callum Preece (1-25).

Simon Wheeler (1-58) claimed the other opener but W Hutchings and N Peters looked to increase the run rate by finding the boundary before the former retired on 60.

Peters was run out for 67 before Asburnham declared on 254-5. The other Winchelsea wicket-takers were Helen Harrod (1-25) and John Josiah (1-31).

Winchelsea started well in response with an opening partnership of 70 before Ed Jury (31) was caught off C Phillimore (1-46). Callum Preece looked to increase the run rate but Jon Peters was dismissed by F Dahms (2-27) for 75, leaving Winchelsea 150-2.

Wheeler scored 12 before being caught and bowled by A Smith (1-25). Callum Preece scored 68 before he was stumped off N Peters (1-2). The other Ashburnham wicket taker was M Sinden (1-6) as Winchelsea finished on 217-6, with honours even.
