Sussex’s match-winner Chris Jordan admitted scoring his brilliant 56 helped make up for the disappointment of being left out of the England team.

He said: “It is great to be able to come back to Sussex and make a contribution, especially one like that which helps us win the game.

“Obviously I was disappointed not to play in the Lord’s Test against New Zealand but you have to get over it very quickly and it’s very satisfying to help us get what was a very special win.”

Jordan revealed he adopted a strategy of batting against the odds which helped him get through.

He said: “At 45 for 5 I don’t think anyone gave us much hope but on that wicket you can’t really bat with a game-plan, you just need to be positive, try and manufacture some shots and ride your luck.”

Jordan stressed: “But we wouldn’t have won without Ben Brown’s innings. He set things up and I just went out there and decided to play my shots and it has paid off.

“It was a good three days for me. I got some overs under my belt and scored runs at a crucial time which is great for confidence. I’m looking forward to meeting up with the (England) boys at Leeds and we’ll go from there.”

Warwickshire coach Dougie Brown reckoned his side should have finished the game off but still recognised the contribution of Chris Jordan and Ben Brown.

He said: “You have to give credit to Ben Brown and Chris Jordan for the way they took the game away from us but at 45 for 5 we should have closed the game out.

“We didn’t take our chances and didn’t execute our skills well enough under pressure.

“The pitch was difficult but today it didn’t do as much because it was sunny. It was good to bowl on and we just fell a bit short.

“It’s our first Championship defeat and the sign of a good team is how they bounce back. This is hard to swallow but we will be looking to bounce back at Lord’s next week against Middlesex.”
