Corbett’s late stand in vain

NICK CORBETT’s shining performance with the bat was not enough to save Polegate and Stone Cross from a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Uckfield Anderida in their East Sussex Division 3 clash.

It looked as if tea would come early after the opening nine Polegate batsmen were all dismissed with just 69 on the board.

Ryan Mitchell had been Uckfield’s lethal weapon, with bowling figures of 7-33, ensuring six of the Polegate batsmen returned to the hutch without even a single run to their name.

Corbett, who had opened the innings, was then joined by Ian Parks and between them, they managed to give Polegate hope with a tally of 164 all out.

Corbett was the last man to fall, out for 71, while Parks fell just short of a half-century on 42, chipping in with three sixes and four fours during the process.

Polegate entered the field with an enthusiasm and hope they thought were beyond them just 90 minutes earlier.

Uckfield’s slow start fuelled Polegate’s belief, with the first wicket falling on 29.

However, that introduced skipper Peter Holman to the crease – a change that snuffed out Polegate’s hopes of an unexpected win as he hit 75.

Holman, ably supported by Phillip Douse (58no), took Uckfield to the brink of victory before eventually being well caught behind the stumps by Stuart Tibble off the bowling of Stuart Conroy.

Conroy picked up one more wicket but it had little effect as Uckfield comfortably crossed the finish line, just as the heavens opened.

Polegate 8 points, Uckfield Anderida 30 points.
