Here's when caravan sites and holiday parks could reopen as government continues to ease lockdown

Despite the gradual easing of lockdown measures in England, it’s going to be a long time until many areas of life get back to ‘normal’.

One of those areas is holidays. But it’s not just travel abroad that’s being affected; those wishing to stay closer to home may have trouble doing so too.

With the summer months creeping up, many will be wondering if they’ll be able to get away to holiday parks, caravan sites and campsites in the UK.

Here's everything you need to know:

When might Butlin’s be open again?

One of the biggest holiday park chains in the UK is Butlin’s.

“These are unprecedented times for everyone," they said in a statement. "We’ll get through this and back to providing great breaks for you all when the time is right.”

So, should you start planning for a holiday following 2 July? Not just yet.

Butlin’s plans will all have to be in line with the government’s update proposals, which are subject to a lot of uncertain conditions.

When will campsites and holiday parks open?

The Government’s next stage of lockdown-easing takes place on 1 June, and sees a phased return for early years settings and schools, the permitting of cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed-doors and the re-opening of more local public transport in urban areas.

At no point does the government's current guidance mention holiday parks in that 1 June time frame.

In fact, the hospitality and leisure sectors don’t get a mention in the Government’s guidance first set out in May until Step Three of the proposed ‘road-map’, which would see the opening of these business no earlier than 4 July.

What about other holiday parks?

Haven holiday parks are currently temporarily closed to holidaymakers until Sunday 5 July 2020 at the earliest.

All Center Parcs villages are also closed until 5 July at least.

Hoseasons are temporarily not accepting bookings for holidays arriving on or before 4 July 2020.

Pontins’ holiday parks are taking booking from 6 July onwards.

When might campsites be open?

It stands to reason, that with so much being said of the outdoors being ‘better’ than indoors in terms of risk of virus transmission, that campsites might be opening earlier than more confined holiday camps.

There is no official word on this, and it’s likely that camp sites will fall under the same restrictions as holiday parks.

“The recent statement by the UK Government on the gradual easing of the current lockdown restrictions is welcome news,” say the Caravan and Motorhome Club.

“However, the Government advice does not currently give the dates that campsites and touring sites are able to reopen and is conditional on further progress being made.

“At this time we are planning on the assumption that we will be able to introduce a phased reopening of our sites network during July.”
