A woman has raised more than £600 for charity after her six-year-old niece was diagnosed with a rare cancer.

Kelly Macey, 33, from Willingdon is a fitness instructor, and organised a zumbathon in Herstmonceux Village Hall, to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

She decided to raise money for the charity in recognition of her niece Olivia’s (Livvy) brave fight, treatment and recovery.

Olivia went through a course of gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and major surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

Kelly said, “Livvy has now completed her treatment and is on the waiting list to have her Hickman line removed, which she is very excited about as it means she will finally be allowed to go swimming. The Royal Marsden Hospital will continue to monitor her every couple of months, but the cancer has not re-appeared, which is great news.”

The two-hour zumbathon was attended by 40 adults and children and raised £617 for the charity. As well as non-stop dancing, a raffle was held with individuals donating a variety of prizes. The event was also generously supported by local businesses.

Kelly added, “I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part, helped out, bought raffle tickets and taught tracks - you are all awesome. Thanks to you we managed to raise a really impressive amount for Children with Cancer UK to go towards helping other children recover from their illness. Thank you.”

The event was supported by local businesses. Ian Stewart at Heringtons Solicitors in Eastbourne covered the cost of the hall hire, The Fitness Rooms in Eastbourne donated free exercise classes as raffle prizes, and Asterix Gym in Eastbourne donated a month’s free gym and class membership. The zumbathon is just one of fundraisers Kelly is organising to help raise funds for the charity. As well as another fitness event in the new year, Kelly and her husband are running the London Marathon in April.Visit Kelly’s http://www.facebook.com/pages/KO-Fit
