Is the jewel in the crown of our Cultural Quarter being treated as a second class citizen?
I refer to the charming Devonshire Park Theatre; it would appear, from the current seasonal brochure, that the theatre is going to be dark for eight weeks out of a total of 17 .
From the end of the run of the pantomime on January 13, there is no new production scheduled until March 25of the remaining period some productions are running for only part weeks .
I realise that the theatre is usually dark during February ,whilst various improvements are carried out either by the Friends of the Devonshire Park Theatre or by professional contractors ; however, this dark period seems to be lasting much longer than is usual .
At the same time three productions which would normally be staged in the Devonshire Park, ie Birds of a Feather, Noises Off and later in the year The Mousetrap are to be transferred to the great barn of the Congress Theatre where they will doubtless be lost.
Is there a lack of quality productions touring the regions at present or is there a hidden agenda within the Council’s Cultural department?
