I REFER to Elizabeth Wright’s letter that appeared in last week’s Herald (December 2).
Not only can the Towner Gallery not afford to buy the John Piper paintings – or any others for that matter – but the residents of Eastbourne cannot afford the Towner Gallery.
I only trust that the Friends of the Towner, via its chair Elizabeth Muir Lewis, do not get further involved in making any contributions to this situation.
Excluding the first year of operation I believe that it would be reasonable to assume that the Gallery has rolled up losses of approximately £3 million.
How much longer is this going to go on?
I do not know of any private company that would contemplate continue trading under such circumstances.
Perhaps it is possible for the gallery space to be drastically reduced with the remainder being converted into profitable activities.
