Titanic plaque must not go unnoticed

After reading the letter from James Lang concerning Eastbourne’s Titanic Memorial (‘Don’t replace the Titanic plaque’, Herald letters, September 9), I must respond to it.

Because the real need is not replacement, but to raise awareness of its existence, for residents and visitors. In fact, I wrote to the Herald some time ago, stressing this need.

My letter was published, yet it elicited no response from the council after urging signs in the area of the memorial, directing people to it.

For without such, people are only likely to find this moving testimonial by sheer chance – as I did some years ago – which is just not good enough, considering the significance of this iconic memorial plaque.
