Stamps with use-by dates?

AS usual the Langney Road post office had queues backing into Debenhams so I decided to use the Pay and Go automated system in the foyer.

Having purchased a stamp for the card I was posting imminently, I was dismayed to find that the other 10 stamps I had purchased for future use had a use-by date of one day.

What on earth is the point of issuing stamps that have to be used by the next day?

And why as a customer are we not informed of this before we use the machines?

I would have complained but was concerned that my stamps would have passed their sell-by date before I reached the front of the queue.
