I wished to write and congratulate Regia Anglorum and the Eastbourne Heritage Service for the excellent Saxon living history event held at Gildredge Park over the May Bank Holiday.
The tented village with its ‘Saxon’ occupants gave a truly authentic view of the lives of our ancient ancestors. All kinds of everyday activities were on display from the making of gorgeous tapestries to chain mail. My highlight was definitely the Viking ship burial – clearly explained to the layman and giving shape and meaning to the artefacts that we might encounter in a museum.
Younger visitors, I’m sure, enjoyed the simulated battles and children were free to roam and touch objects in ways that made history not something of the past but a part of our present.
Let’s hope that Eastbourne, with its many historical treasures, will support more of these events in the future.
