Jane Schulze (‘Please stop being so negative’ Opinion, November 3) unfortunately misread my letter.

I wrote, “Why is Mr Gulzar still harping on that he should pocket the £2 million the Cameron government gave to Eastbourne.”

Ms Schulze answers that Mr Gulzar is a generous resident who has poured his money into the development of the pier. Not a single fact is given to support this claim. What costs has he outlaid set against the income he has received and will receive from pier tenants from his personal ownership of the pier? Is she saying he will not seek, at some stage, to sell the pier at a profit?

Supplying actual facts to support the admirable Mr Gulzar she might also answer the question: Is adoration of a 19th century diversion the only focus we can come up with here in the 21st century? It is backward ideas that make a backwater town.
