Obvious Eastbourne should seek unitary status

I was disappointed to see so little reaction to the suggestion that Eastbourne should be a unitary authority, to me it seems so obvious.

We are a town of some 102,000 population, so why on earth do we need another tier of expensive government – are we not capable of running our own affairs? By all means leave East Sussex County Council to run things outside the borough, but why they should be involved in things like parking in the town centre beats me.

If our MP really does wish to advance the town, an excellent first step would be to argue the case for unitary status (I can’t see many residents objecting) and go the whole hog and have an elected mayor instead of a “Buggin’s turn” system which provides a mayor without any power who few people can name.

In doing this, we would have someone who is more accountable to the voters and someone who could fight for many of the things we need in this town and who would try and bring it back to the elegance and cleanliness that we once had.

I suppose this system is called democracy …
