Congratulations to the Eastbourne and Seaford rugby clubs for staging their Sussex Spitfire League local derby under floodlights at Hampden Park on Friday evening.
Having been granted permission from the league and their opponents to switch the game from Saturday afternoon, officials at the Eastbourne club worked tirelessly to make the event a success.
Thankfully the early rain and strong winds disappeared and a calm, mild evening brought out an excellent crowd which was treated to a full-blooded derby,
Seaford’s determined challenge was eventually quelled by the home side - but it was rugby that was the winner from this experiment.
Long may the Saturday afternoon rugby continue but that can often leave some sports fans choosing between the various local games on offer at the weekend.
Friday evening’s crowd clearly showed there is good reason to sometimes move games around and it seems the Eastbourne club hopes to repeat the experiment more times this season.
That will, of course, depend upon the co-operation of opponents and the league.
And just a final word for the well-respected referee who, in a calm manner and with a permanent smile upon his face, controlled what could have been a combustible derby in an impressive manner.
