LETTER: World more dangerous

As a town with a proud military tradition, and the home of the Redoubt Museum, Eastbourne’s many families with members serving in the armed forces should be profoundly troubled by Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond’s forecast of further deep cuts in our defence budget, which has already been severely slashed by the Tory-Lib Dem coalition.

In a BBC interview Mr Hammond refused to commit a future Conservative government to spend even the bare minimum of 2% of our GDP which is NATO’s target for all member state to achieve.

This clearly means that the Tories are planning further cuts, throwing more of our brave servicemen and women on the scrapheap and weakening Britain at a time - with ISIS and Putin running rampage - when the world has never been more dangerous.
