LETTER: Why did PM call for a vote?

As I listen to the increasingly dire warnings from David Cameron and Co about what will happen to the UK if we leave the EU (what next – a plague of locust?), I can’t help wondering if our Prime Minister knew of all this impending doom before he set out on his woefully inadequate ‘re-negotiation’ tour. If not, why not? If he was aware of these possible hazards, why did he say (and I heard him say more than once) that he ‘ruled nothing out’, thereby implying that he would consider recommending that we leave?

Why, if the future outside might be so very bleak, did he even contemplate calling a referendum?
