I refer to your headline ‘Tourism drive begins’ [Herald, November 27]. I cannot understand how you or the local authority consider that the purchase of the Cash Converters building in Seaside Road has anything to do with tourism, or that the purchase kicks off a regeneration programme! What utter nonsense. The local authority’s responsibilities to provide housing has nothing to do with tourism and does nothing to enhance Eastbourne as a tourist destination, or to encourage quality shops. If tourism and quality businesses are to be attracted to Eastbourne the local authority must upgrade Seaside Road, Terminus Road, right through to Little Chelsea, the shopping area in Langney Road and Pevensey Road. This can easily be achieved by planting trees, attractive lighting and renewing the public walkways, and some water features in the town would do the trick. No huge expense involved, but the end result would be worth every penny. The seafront needs a huge infusion of architectural lighting and the now owner of the pier needs all the support we can give him so that the pier stands out like a gem. Although Eastbourne is a pleasant place, and we have an attractive seafront, it lacks sparkle. A prime example of this is the Carpet Gardens. Beautiful as they are, the finishing touch is two pot plants where there were two fountains, although trickling like a leaky tap there was movement. It’s about time that the fountains were reinstalled, but this time something very substantial. It would seem that we have a local authority with no artistic flair, otherwise Eastbourne would be a number one destination.
