The opinion polls and currency markets suggest that Britain may be about to leave the European Union. I despair.
Amid the mass of speculation in this campaign just two facts have stood out for me: immigration is the issue that concerns voters most, and that older people are the group most in favour of leaving the EU.
I share that concern about immigration, but I’m also aware that Britain has an ageing population. With more older people to support and less people of working age we could choose to welcome the arrival of the brightest and most enterprising young people from other European nations, coming here to work and pay taxes.
I suppose that those planning to vote ‘leave’ in the referendum on Thursday, June 23, believe that the benefits of separation will outweigh the disruption and uncertainty that we shall experience in the short term. I can only hope that they’re right.
