LETTER: Voice for the silent majority

Congratulations on the initiation of the aptly named AFOOT, the pedestrian equivalent of BESPOKE. May the group quickly achieve the same respect and influence as the latter and become a strident voice for the hitherto silent majority who seek only to enjoy a stress-free walk along the promenade without having to run the gauntlet of cyclists on what is intended to be a traffic-free zone.

To its credit, AFOOT is not anti-cycling per se but recognises along with many more the folly of mixing pedestrians and cyclists without total segregation if safety is to be assured.

One might ask, “What’s the alternative?” Will pedestrians have to accept and reconcile themselves to seeing more slices of their natural territory being filched and utilised for purposes for which it was never intended?

If, alas, the die has already been cast in favour of pro-prom cycling, then no doubt AFOOT will have a major role to play in the ensuing fallout.
