LETTER: Veggie cafes nothing new

In your paper [October 23] there was an article about the wonderful Miss Walls Back Garden vegetarian cafe in Grove Road, Eastbourne.

The article stated that Jackie Walls has opened up the town’s first vegetarian cafe. I feel I have to correct whoever wrote this piece as I worked in the town’s first vegetarian cafe which was Nature’s Way. It was above the Nature’s Way shop.

I started work there in 1985 and it was run by a marvellous and creative couple called Dorothy and Maurice Fossitt. They did wonderful quiches, soups, salads and nut roasts plus superb desserts. People would queue down the stairs at lunchtime waiting to get served. I once even served Victoria Wood when she was in the town to do a show.

A second vegetarian restaurant opened up next to the public toilets down the side of TJ Hughes called Betty Boop’s and I worked there as well. Sadly, both cafes closed in the late 1980s and there wasn’t another vegetarian restaurant until Greens opened on Seaside.

Miss Walls Back Garden is a fantastic place for vegetarians. The food is fresh and tasty. Just thought I would set the record straight, though.
