May I crave the hospitality of your columns to praise the organisers, officials and voluntary marshals of the Eastbourne Triathlon? Coming between the carnival and the tennis, it seems to have escaped the attention of most locals.
This is not surprising since the competitors assembled at 6am on a Sunday morning, when most of our burghers were doubtless fast asleep. A rainbow arched over the South Downs, against a dark sky, which later produced a downpour. However, for the 188 competitors, who braved the sea against a strong ebb tide, cycled over the downs to East Dean and back over Beachy Head, and on to the Sovereign Centre, then scaled the downs once more, this time on foot, the support and encouragement of all those friendly faces made for a fantastic community atmosphere, of which Eastbourne should be proud. The marshals stuck to their posts throughout the final hour’s pouring rain, and continued to cheer us all on.
A massive thank you to all concerned!
