LETTER: Town amenity under threat

Lewes District Council claims the development of homes on the Buckle Car Park site in Seaford will bring economic benefits. Residents are asked to accept the loss of an important and well-used amenity. The development would render the western end of our seafront inaccessible to many. The beach here is used by local people and visitors, bathers, walkers and water-sport enthusiasts. Despite what LDC claims, the Buckle Car Park users do visit Seaford town centre and contribute to the economy and vitality of the town. Bishopstone Station would lose the only nearby parking for travellers. Seaford people on the Housing List can now expect to move away to have the chance of a home.

The petition opposing the development has been delivered, but it seems the Buckle Car Park cannot be removed from the area site list. It is vital, therefore, that residents (and others) make demands of LDC to offer compensatory parking and toilet facilities near the site. They should ask why there cannot be social or affordable housing in Alfriston Road. The consultation event on July 28 is a chance for people to challenge and question the developers and LDC. It is vital that people raise concerns now and participate in the debate.
