LETTER: Tight squeeze in the pool

Has the management of the Sovereign Centre gone completely mad? They have recently changed the timetable of the swimming pools!

I use the small area of the Gala Pool for exercise and gentle swimming. I am not alone. The times of opening have gone from 6.30am-9am to 7.30am-8.30am. There are at least 12 of us, if not more at times, that use the pool for exercise and swimming. If we all turn up together, how on earth are we going to fit in?

If there are six people in the pool at any one time, it is a struggle not to bump into each other. We manage usually between us!

The decision is probably due to the dreaded ‘elf and safety’. Two lifeguards required! I have to say that in the past seven years at least, there has only been ONE lifeguard supervising the two pools. This can be done safely as long as the lifeguard positions the tall chair properly. We are all competent adults with a sense of ‘awareness’ for the people in the pool. Yes, we may have a range of mobility or weakness in swimming, but as long as the lifeguard is in vision, we can attract their attention. The decision to discriminate (a strong word I know) against disability and weakness is dreadful and should be overturned.
