I was at a consultation meeting at the Downs Leisure Centre for the proposed housing development on The Buckle Car Park in Seaford. What a sham! In my discussions with councillors etc it emerged that a ‘contract’ had already been entered into between Lewes District Council and the developers. This contract was signed in July and, according to some people I spoke to, would cost more than £1 million to break.
We all know Lewes District Council has to balance the books and that this is causing lots of problems, but why did they enter into an agreement before planning permission had been granted? Would it have hurt to wait – or were there other reasons why it was signed so early?
It seems then that development of this site is a ‘fait accompli’.
Our cash-strapped council cannot afford the opportunity of selling its most valuable asset and would be liable to a hefty penalty if planning permission was refused.
