LETTER: The issues can be addressed

Now that Eastbourne Borough Council has been given the right to change the local cycling legislation, would this not be a good opportunity to make certain stipulations concerning every one who rides a bicycle. In this day and age we all have to look at the modern attitude to cycling making it safe for everyone to enjoy, especially with the modern trend of cycling on footpaths. Yes a big issue, but one that with a little careful thought is not insurmountable.

Certain points come to mind regarding the responsibility of all riders using the footpaths:

1. Bells should be compulsory.

2. Helmets worn by all.

3. Pedal cycles must always be in good condition.

4. Speed restrictions.

5. Thought given to riders having to have personal liability insurance.

6. On the spot fines can be issued to riders not complying with the regulations.

7. Skateboard restrictions in certain areas.

8. Regulations clearly on view.

If you mix-up people and moving objects you will always have accidents – a three stone child on a bike can be lethal. But with careful thought we all can share the same area.
