LETTER: Shared route can succeed

As a promenader, cyclist and rather poor roller skater, I would like to say that I am pleased that cyclists will hopefully be able to use the promenade together with other Eastbourne residents and visitors.

It is, however, important that all concerned share the space responsibly with each other.

Cyclists, especially children who need to be away from the sometimes dangerous road along the seafront, together with skate boarders, roller skaters and electrically propelled mobility scooter riders need to ride or drive in a careful and considerate manner keeping their speed below, say, 10mph. Pedestrians should be aware that it is a shared route and be alert to the fact that wheeled apparatus may be approaching. There also needs to be adequate signage to alert and remind people of the new status.

I once rode along the shared promenade in Bexhill and experienced how well a mixed route can be enjoyed by all as long as everybody behaves reasonably.
