LETTER: Sappers solve bridge problem

Travelling to Seaford and beyond is fast becoming a nightmare, mainly due to the delays posed by the narrowness of Exceat Bridge over the River Cuckmere.

There seems to be a reluctance on the part of East Sussex County Council to do anything about it. One solution would be to widen the bridge by removing the pedestrian crossing and then build a separate pedestrian bridge alongside.

Years ago when living elsewhere we suffered similarly with a narrow bridge. The highway authority then hit on an excellent idea. They asked the Royal Engineers to put a Bailey Bridge alongside the existing narrow bridge as an exercise. This they willingly did and on completion they gave the Bailey Bridge to the community. Verb sap – a word to the wise is sufficient.
