LETTER: Pier must be restored

Pier must be restored

How wonderful that all those on the pier when the fire broke out got away safely. However, Eastbourne itself may less readily escape scot free. Brighton may have suffered similarly but it has a second surviving pier and the one which was lost although now in a state of decay is not a focal point. In contrast Eastbourne pier by the carpet gardens is located at the very spot where most visitors see our seafront for the first time.

If whatever the cost our pier is not restored as quickly as possible or if, alternatively, what remains is not removed intoto, then it could well be that it will come to be said that the decline of Eastbourne as a once stylish and successful resort began on July 30 2014.
