LETTER: No entitlement to public cash

I have never written to a newspaper before, but your recent article about the claims by Abid Gulzar that he deserves the £2 million of public money given to the town by the Government forced me into it.

If he hasn’t got enough money to run the pier why did he buy it? He is the private owner of the pier. He bought it and it is his to do what he likes with. Good luck to him. However, I fail to see even the slightest entitlement that he has to this public money.

Having researched why the town received the money it is clear that, putting aside David Cameron’s political motivations prior to the General Election, the money was intended to boost various tourism related initiatives in Eastbourne.

As reported in the Herald, the council and other local groups prepared a business case that included a number of different projects. The Government signed them off and wrote the cheque. This is probably my first and last letter to a newspaper but I hope I have made my point.
