LETTER: Many friends salute maestro

Your report that John Mann’s present summer season at The Winter Garden is to be his last cannot go unremarked. As an admirer of John’s wonderful talent for nearly 30 years now, I deem him one of the finest entertainers I have ever seen. Dexterity at the organ and piano is accompanied by a brilliant comic presence which means that laughter is never far away – who can ever forget that achingly funny evocation of those old music-hall troupers, Wilson, Keppel and Betty, which always used to bring the house down?

Above all, I think it is John’s great love and great playing of melody that has attracted devoted audiences to The Winter Garden for 35 years and, assuredly, that venue will never see his like again. Maestro, your many friends salute you.
