I write in my capacity as chair of the East Sussex Economic Advisory Board and also an Ambassador for Locate for East Sussex, supporting business.
I was honoured to be with Sheikh Abid Gulzar, the new owner of Eastbourne Pier, when he met with locals about the future of the iconic site.
It was refreshing to see the public so engaged with a project which is clearly going to go from strength to strength in the coming months and years. I sincerely hope this will mean extra tourism for Eastbourne and extra jobs, bringing a much-needed boost to the East Sussex economy.
I will be working with Mr Gulzar to maximise the opportunities that his purchase – and investment – of Eastbourne Pier will surely bring.
He is often a controversial character but a man I admire greatly. This is a great time for Eastbourne, for its pier, and for the town. Economic activity is obviously as important as ever, and this looks like being a real success story. Mr Gulzar has plenty of ideas which I listened to with great interest.
I may live in Hastings but I care greatly about East Sussex, and part of my role includes the economic well-being of such towns as Eastbourne.
Good luck Mr Gulzar, I will work with you – Eastbourne Pier can thrive, and I believe that it will.
