Recently my wife and I decided on a five-day break to Eastbourne, staying at the Burlington Hotel. Though we have travelled abroad many times, this is our first visit to the town and, all being well, it will not be our last. The weather was indeed lovely for late October, and during a stroll along the pier, I glanced back to the seafront. The beach and white buildings were bathed in glorious sunshine, with a distant headland etched against the sky. I casually remarked to my wife the scene before me reminded me somewhat of Nice. We were very impressed with the cleanliness along the promenade. Dog walkers a-plenty, but no sign of any mess. Neither did we see any litter and workmen were busy tending the carpet gardens. Finally a word of thanks and praise for our driver/courier, James, who I believe is a local man. His knowledge and consistent commentary on items of interest we passed, laced with great humour, was indeed a tonic. No mean feat while driving carefully a six-wheeled coach. Well done all round, residents and council alike.
