I would like to respond to Mrs Hoban’s letter [September 30].Unlike Mrs Hoban,I cannot speak for everyone but I am extremely impressed with the work Mr Gulzar has put into the pier. Had the allocated funds been solely for the pier they would not have been sufficient to purchase it let alone restore and maintain.
I have lived in close proximity to the pier for many years and have watched it fall into disrepair, becoming an eyesore and embarrassment to Eastbourne. Mr Gulzar has worked tirelessly to restore and improve and can be seen most days on the pier talking and listening to residents and visitors.
The Grand Parade lampposts started their life with gold tops and, although somewhat tarnished now, they don’t appear to offend anyone. I believe Mr Gulzar has recently won an award for his charitable works. Let’s take a leaf (gold maybe) out of his book and be positive and supportive.
