LETTER: Keep religion out of things

It’s refreshing to see two of your correspondents responding to refugees with sympathy rather than racist paranoia [Letters, August 28], but we cannot agree with the idea that the religious community can do any good.

We would say that the religious community has done quite enough already.

The religious community zealously backed the First World War and the carving up of the Middle East that followed. It supported the idea that the Nazi Holocaust could be atoned for by throwing Palestinians out of their homeland in order to resettle European Jews in it.

For decades, ‘Christian’ western governments promoted political Islam in the Middle East, as a counterweight to ‘Communism’. Then, when the Soviet Bloc collapsed, Islam suddenly became the bogeyman.

When the messianic Tony Blair and the rabid fundamentalist George W Bush waded in, following 9/11, Bush was stupid enough to talk about a ‘crusade’. This was a gift to jihadis everywhere. None of the current psychopathic religious cults in the Middle East would be there if not for religiously-endorsed western intervention.

If and when refugees arrive here, the last thing they or we need is another lot of zealots trying to evangelise them.
