LETTER: It’s a violation of human rights to make shop assistants work on Boxing Day

My diary and my calendar indicate that December 26 is a Bank Holiday, a public holiday, the day when the Feast of St Stephen is celebrated. It is not the day when the human rights of shop assistants should be violated in as much as they are expected to work for longer hours than usual in order to satisfy the avarice of the bosses, the shareholders, an the greedy general public. There are no banks or post offices open.

There is no public transport, so why do shops open?

Shop workers are as entitled as the rest of the population to have the day’s holiday.
