LETTER: Hospices could be in jeopardy

Whilst I have opposed Steve Parlanti with regard to his campaign for assisted suicide/dying I am happy to support his backing for improved palliative care for the dying. He points out that end-of-life care in hospices such as St Wilfrid’s is essential to our community and is, potentially, at risk from proposed Government cuts. He also points out that St Wilfrid’s has to depend on voluntary donations for 85 per cent of its running costs.

I know that some politicians argue that hospices such as St Wilfrid’s have a great deal of independence because they are not entirely run on public money and so are not at the behest of governments. Nevertheless, a balance needs to be struck and it would be good to see our politicians publicly endorsing the likes of St Wilfrid’s.

Caroline Ansell, our MP, made her support for St Wilfrid’s very clear at the General Election. I am sure this will continue.
