I saw Peter Pan at the Devonshire Park Theatre on New Years’s Day and it was the best pantomime I have ever attended. And I have seen quite a few, as well as taking the part of the fairy godmother in an amateur production of Cinderella some years ago. From beginning to end it was non-stop fun and pure entertainment.
Particularly splendid were the characters Swash and Buckle, Wendy and Captain Hook. Ably supported by many talented youngsters, this was a class act. It puzzled me at first why the musicians were placed in the boxes at both sides of the stage, only to discover later as the show progressed that the orchestra pit had been turned into ‘the sea’ represented by blue plastic balls, from which emerged a singing, wiggling mermaid.
The whole production was brilliantly balanced, and at the same time both magical and enchanting, and the cast and production team are to be congratulated.
